Small businesses are the building blocks of the US economy. Independent food businesses employ many hundreds of thousands of people in the US, and tens of thousands in New York alone.
On October 13th, 2018, the livelihood of almost 200 Brooklyn businesses was jeopardized by the abrupt and recent closure of Pilotworks, one of the main commercial kitchens in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. The closure affected both the kitchen and the distribution arm, and left these businesses without a production facility or means to distribute their products to clients across the New York Metro area. This is a setback that can put many of these producers out of business, and is a blow to the independent food ecosystem as a whole.
What can you do to help?
Support independent food. Every dollar counts. Help us to continue to build and sustain the independent food community in New York City, and support these businesses now and throughout the holiday season.
If you know of commercial kitchens, available built kitchen space, small distributors interested in working with us, job openings for displaced staff and kitchen workers, or are simply interested in carrying these products in your store or restaurant, we’d love to hear from you.
